Avalanche is an open-source, high-performance Layer 1 blockchain platform designed to provide unified infrastructure for decentralized applications, digital assets, and custom blockchains. It employs the Avalanche consensus mechanism based on the Snow protocol family, achieving sub-second finality through random subsampling while balancing security, decentralization, and scalability. The platform consists of three built-in chains: the X-Chain for asset creation and transfer, the C-Chain for Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, and the P-Chain for validator coordination and custom chain management. Developers can launch independent Layer 1 chains (formerly subnets) with custom virtual machines, rules, and token economics while sharing platform security and interoperability. AVAX is the native token used for transaction fees, staking to secure the network, governance, and cross-chain resource allocation.
